  • Recommended Hole Sizes | Technifast Ltd

Recommened hole size guidance for Technifast products Datasheets Material Specifications Pin Economics Plating & Finishing Recommended Hole Sizes Shear Strengths Standards Tolerances RECOMMENDED HOLE SIZES It is important to follow the hole diameter instructions given by the various manufacturers and standards organisations, and the data given on our website and datasheets comes from these sources. However, the user should decide in the circumstances of a particular application which hole size, within the permitted tolerance range, to adopt as this can effect the performance of the pin considerably. The general principle is that the inserting pin or dowel requires significantly more force at the bottom of the hole tolerance range than at the top. This has the following implications;- The higher insertion force required, the more difficult the assembly operation, and risk of damaging or over-stressing the area of the material surrounding the hole is greater The harder the pin is to insert, the more firmly it will stay in place so in applications where vibration is a consideration, it may be worthwhile to use a minimum hole size. Where an interference fit is required (as opposed to a sliding or clearance fit) the dowel must be precision ground and the hole must be reamed. The relationship between the diameter of the pin and the diameter of the hole must take into account the ductility of the dowel and the hole material and will vary more accordingly to this factor than according to the size of the dowel itself. Visit our product pages or datasheets to access the required recommended hole size for each product. • Plating & Finishing | Technifast Ltd

Information about the different finishes available for Technifast products only Datasheets Material Specifications Pin Economics Plating & Finishing Recommended Hole Sizes Shear Strengths Standards Tolerances PLATING & FINISHING Technifast can manufacture precision fasteners and components such as pins, dowels, spacers, inserts and engineers keys with a range of coatings, plating and finishes. Depending on the application, components can be plated to improve resistance to corrosion, provide a uniformed surface or made decorative. Read on to discover some of the coating techniques used on precision engineered parts. We work with respected and established plating and finishing partners to provide a high-quality service, which we offer as part of our manufacturing service. ** Please note, these services are outsourced and can only be offered in conjunction with parts supplied by Technifast ** Zinc Plating Zinc plating is a process which is well-suited to hardened steel base materials. It provides a very bright finish and usually incorporates a clear chromate treatment to increase corrosion resistance. Zinc plating is an established technique for small, precision engineered fasteners. Due to the continued and unpredictable risk of failure, customers should be aware of the risk of subjecting high tensile fasteners to an electrolytic process, and to avoid this risk wherever possible. The responsibility for assessing whether electro-zinc plated high tensile fasteners should be used in a particular application remains with the end-user, in liaison with the design authority. Nickel Plating Nickel plating is a cost-effective and commonly recognised technique in the manufacture of specialist components. It is used to improve the hardness of the base material, whilst making it more resistant to both wear and corrosion. Zinc Nickel Plating Zinc Nickel plating is one of the most popular plating methods, providing a finish which is suitable for steel and brass components. It is widely used in the fastener industry to offer improved protection from corrosion and as a more environmentally-friendly alternative to cadmium plating. Electroless Nickel Plating This is a very common form of electroless coating. An electroless nickel finish offers outstanding corrosion protection combined with a natural lubricity. This results in a surface finish that is uniform across the high-precision components that Technifast manufacture and supply. Stainless Steel Passivation A stainless steel base material is naturally resistant to corrosion. However, stainless steel is not completely unaffected by rust, and the passivation process can improve the resilience to oxidisation by eradicating the free iron from the stainless steel to further help protect against corrosion. Decorative Chrome Plating This is a technique that can also be referred to as nickel-chrome plating and is used to give an attractive finish to a variety of applications. It is popular for components which will be ‘on show’, but it is also hard wearing and stain resistant. Geomet® 500 Coating Geomet® 500 was formed specifically with integral lubricant for coating fasteners, to assist in assembly and to give a consistent tightening performance. Fasteners coated with Geomet® 500 have a silver/grey metallic appearance. They are also electrically conductive, making them a suitable choice for most applications. • Shear Strengths | Technifast Ltd

Double Shear figures serve mainly to compare the relative strengths of different types of pin, or different diameters of the same type of pin. Datasheets Material Specifications Pin Economics Plating & Finishing Recommended Hole Sizes Shear Strengths Standards Tolerances SHEAR STRENGTHS Double Shear figures serve mainly to compare the relative strengths of different types of pin, or different diameters of the same type of pin. The conditions prevailing in a given application usually differ from test conditions. The test itself is carried out according to ISO 8749 and records the maximum load the pin will withstand before fracture. In practise, manufacturers’ figures provide the minimum load without any safety margin. Consequently shear figures are a design guideline and not a guarantee of performance. The figures given elsewhere across our website and datasheets are for double shear applications. Where a pin is used in single shear, the values should be halved. It is important to note that figures given based on testing to ISO 8749 do not allow for the effect of dynamic (shock) loads or bending moments. Specifically the test stipulates the following restrictions: - The clearance between the two pieces of the test block must not exceed 0.15 mm in order to maintain a straight line of shear. This is important in that in an assembly where the holes in the mating components are deeply countersunk, (even if the components themselves are flush) there will not be a straight line of shear and the resulting bending moment will reduce the shear strength. The shear planes must be at least one pin diameter from the end of the pin, and at least two diameters apart. The load must not be applied at a rate in excess of 13mm/min. In other words this is a test for static shear loads, not dynamic. Where an engineering application includes conditions that are not covered by the ISO 8749 test, the following guidelines may be used. Where there are dynamic loads, a coiled pin will perform better due to its shock-absorbing features. Where there is a bending moment of some significance a hardened solid pin is preferable, either through hardened for maximum shear strength or case hardened where less shear strength but more resistance to bending moments is required. Where there is a high level of vibration, a grooved pin will have the maximum retention provided it is of the full-length parallel grooved type (DIN 1473).
