Although there are different names within the industry, there are two types of spring pins; Slotted or Coiled . Slotted Spring Pins are 'c' shaped with a slot along the length of the pin. Other names that are used for Slotted Spring Pins are 'Split Spring Pins', 'Spring Dowel Pins', 'Bissell Pins, 'Selloc Pins', 'Tension Pins', 'Spring Tension Pins', 'Groverlock Pins', 'Roll Pins' . Coiled Spring Pins are 2-1/4 coils of spring or stainless steel (looks like a swiss roll), and can also be known as 'Coiled Pins', 'Roll Pins', 'Spiral Pins', 'Scroll Pins', 'Spring Tension Pins' If Technifast is asked for a 'Spring Pin', we will ask if you require the slotted or coiled type to ensure you receive the correct product you're looking for. What is Technifast's Minimum Order? For UK Mainland orders, there is a minimum line value of £2.00, with a minimum order value of £10.00, excluding VAT. All other countries, price is on application. Properties Of Austenitic Stainless Steel From the smallest precision component to the largest skyscraper, stainless steel is an integral part of modern life. Stainless steel is often the material of choice for industrial fasteners, as it offers a good balance of corrosion resistance and durability. The term stainless steel is given to a wide range of corrosion-resistant steel alloys. The fundamental component of a stainless steel alloy is a minimum chromium content of 10.5%, with varying quantities of carbon, silicon and manganese. Other elements such as nickel, copper and molybdenum can also be added to change the properties of the material. The most widely used type of stainless steel is Austenitic steel. It contains high levels of chromium and nickel, and lower levels of carbon. This nickel-based stainless steel is classed as the 300 Series. Technifast are specialists in the manufacture of precision components using the popular Grade 304. We also have vast experience with Grade 316, which has added molybdenum to further improve its corrosion resistance, making it ideal for marine environments or surgical equipment. The 300 Series of stainless steel can be characteristically defined by its weldability and formability. Grade 304 is the most weldable of the stainless steel family, and although care should be taken to avoid hot cracking it is compatible with all welding processes. If the application demands good formability, then Grade 304 is the practical choice, being more malleable than other types of stainless steel. By understanding the benefits of Austenitic stainless steel, you can make an informed choice on the best type of material to suit your individual application. What Are The Benefits Of Zinc Plating? Zinc plating is an established process suited to hardened steel base materials. It offers added protection to steel components against corrosion. The zinc creates a barrier acting as a thin, sacrificial coating, helping to prevent corrosion from reaching the steel surface of the component beneath. Zinc is a widely available material and depending on the application and quantity, it can be a cost-effective option for businesses on a budget when used as an alternative to stainless steel. Stainless steel is generally more expensive than a zinc plated option, due to the chromium content of stainless steel. However, the benefits of a cheaper alternative would need to be considered against the strength and corrosion resistance of stainless steel. Aesthetically, zinc plating produces a bright finish and superior appearance to an uncoated steel component - which is an important factor if the fastener is going to be visible within the intended application. Technifast work with respected and established plating and finishing partners to provide a high-quality service, which we offer as part of our manufacturing service. We do not offer these services on parts that have not been manufactured or supplied by Technifast. Should I Choose A2 Or A4 Stainless Steel Material? The grade of stainless steel used for a component will be determined by the environment the fastener will be exposed to. Selecting the correct grade of stainless steel ensures the fasteners will be of a high-quality and perform in the application for which they are intended: A2 Stainless Steel is a commonly used grade, as it’s very versatile and offers strong abrasion resistance, plus a good resistance to corrosion and high-hardness levels. A2 stainless steel is from the austenitic family, containing 18% chromium and 8% nickel. A4 Stainless Steel is the best option when the component is to be used in a harsher environment. The addition of molybdenum to its composition provides the A4 grade with a greater level of corrosion resistance, making it suited for use in salt water or certain chemical solutions. Many fasteners used in the medical industry are manufactured from A4 stainless steel. Stainless Steel A2 is typically a lower-cost option, but the additional cost of stainless steel A4 is a good investment, due to the fact it is very resistant to tarnishing and corrosion, making it a long-lasting material to use. What Are DIN And ISO Standards? DIN is the acronym for ‘Deutsches Institut für Normung’, which is the ‘German institute for standardisation’ who developed detailed technical standards for the engineering industry, amongst many other industries. With reference to fasteners, DIN number indicates the that the part conforms to a specific metric standard. The International Standards Organisation (ISO) standard has evolved to supersede the DIN standard, which was historically the predominant metric fastener system referred to. The intention of the ISO standard was to standardise the technical specifications worldwide to simplify the system and aid the flow of trade via a universally recognised standard. In practice, DIN and ISO standards are still both commonly used when specifying fasteners and both standards are recognised by Technifast when our customers specify the fasteners they require. What Are The Differences Between Interference / Transition / Clearance Fits? Engineering fits are defined by the allowance of tightness between two mating parts - usually a shaft and a hole - of an assembly. The type of fit used is identified by the relative movement required between the components to allow the parts to perform their specific function. Clearance Fit: If the assembly requires the components to move freely in relation to each other, this is termed as a clearance fit. In this type of engineering fit, the maximum permitted shaft diameter is less than the diameter of the hole. When using this type of fit, the clearance value is always a positive number. Interference Fit: With an interference fit, the components of the assembly mate together tightly, so that relative movement is not possible. The minimum diameter allowance of the pin is always greater than the maximum diameter of the hole, meaning an interference fit is mainly used as a permanent assembly for parts which rely on rigidity and alignment. Transition Fit: A transition fit sits between a clearance and interference fit and can have a positive or negative clearance between the mating parts. This fit is used when an accurate location is required, but a small amount of either clearance is acceptable.

- Plating & Finishing | Technifast Ltd
Information about the different finishes available for Technifast products only Datasheets Material Specifications Pin Economics Plating & Finishing Recommended Hole Sizes Shear Strengths Standards Tolerances PLATING & FINISHING Technifast can manufacture precision fasteners and components such as pins, dowels, spacers, inserts and engineers keys with a range of coatings, plating and finishes. Depending on the application, components can be plated to improve resistance to corrosion, provide a uniformed surface or made decorative. Read on to discover some of the coating techniques used on precision engineered parts. We work with respected and established plating and finishing partners to provide a high-quality service, which we offer as part of our manufacturing service. ** Please note, these services are outsourced and can only be offered in conjunction with parts supplied by Technifast ** Zinc Plating Zinc plating is a process which is well-suited to hardened steel base materials. It provides a very bright finish and usually incorporates a clear chromate treatment to increase corrosion resistance. Zinc plating is an established technique for small, precision engineered fasteners. Due to the continued and unpredictable risk of failure, customers should be aware of the risk of subjecting high tensile fasteners to an electrolytic process, and to avoid this risk wherever possible. The responsibility for assessing whether electro-zinc plated high tensile fasteners should be used in a particular application remains with the end-user, in liaison with the design authority. Nickel Plating Nickel plating is a cost-effective and commonly recognised technique in the manufacture of specialist components. It is used to improve the hardness of the base material, whilst making it more resistant to both wear and corrosion. Zinc Nickel Plating Zinc Nickel plating is one of the most popular plating methods, providing a finish which is suitable for steel and brass components. It is widely used in the fastener industry to offer improved protection from corrosion and as a more environmentally-friendly alternative to cadmium plating. Electroless Nickel Plating This is a very common form of electroless coating. An electroless nickel finish offers outstanding corrosion protection combined with a natural lubricity. This results in a surface finish that is uniform across the high-precision components that Technifast manufacture and supply. Stainless Steel Passivation A stainless steel base material is naturally resistant to corrosion. However, stainless steel is not completely unaffected by rust, and the passivation process can improve the resilience to oxidisation by eradicating the free iron from the stainless steel to further help protect against corrosion. Decorative Chrome Plating This is a technique that can also be referred to as nickel-chrome plating and is used to give an attractive finish to a variety of applications. It is popular for components which will be ‘on show’, but it is also hard wearing and stain resistant. Geomet® 500 Coating Geomet® 500 was formed specifically with integral lubricant for coating fasteners, to assist in assembly and to give a consistent tightening performance. Fasteners coated with Geomet® 500 have a silver/grey metallic appearance. They are also electrically conductive, making them a suitable choice for most applications. Every application is different, but here we show a little bit of information that might help Datasheets Material Specifications Pin Economics Plating & Finishing Recommended Hole Sizes Shear Strengths Standards Tolerances PIN ECONOMICS Every application is individual, but the following information acts as a guide on choosing the correct pin for your requirements. The pin must perform its required function. Economic factors only come into play in choosing the pin that meets the technical needs of the particular application. Typical considerations include: Where the maximum possible resistance to static shear loads is required, then a through hardened solid steel dowel has the most strength. If space permits, a larger diameter of other types of pin can be considered. Remember, a small increase in the diameter of the pin makes a large difference to the strength. Where the maximum possible resistance to vibration is needed, avoid spring pins and use either grooved pins to DIN 1473 (full length parallel grooves) or a hardened dowel fitted to the tightest possible tolerances. For resistance to corrosion, stainless is preferred to zinc or other plated finishes, except where the problem is galvanic corrosion between the pin and the components into which the pin is to be inserted. Plated finishes offer limited resistance to atmospheric, marine or chemical corrosion as the plated surface is liable to damage during insertion and in the case of spring pins and cotter pins the inside surfaces are not fully protected. For most commercial purposes, A1/A2 grades of austenitic stainless (303, 304) are sufficient to give good protection and are commercially available in most types of pin. For marine or chemical resistance, A4 grades such as 316 are essential, but this limits the choice of pin as A4 is not readily available in all types of pin. The shear strength of austenitic stainless is lower than that of hardened steel so if the application requires both corrosion resistance and high strength a larger diameter should be considered For hinge applications where the pin will be subject to friction from rotation avoid slotted spring pins as the open slot can cause wear. For applications where the pin will require regular removal for purposes of repair or adjustment, consider extractable dowels (DIN 7979) or extractable taper pins (DIN 7977 or 7978). For safety-critical applications, avoid any form of electrolytic plating as the process to remove hydrogen embrittlement resulting from such plating is not fully reliable. Where considerations of hygiene are important, such as with food processing equipment, solid pins (dowels, grooved or taper) are preferred as dirt retention is avoided. Should you require any further information, please do not hesitate to contact us on +44 1536 461140 or sales@technifast.co.uk .
